In town areas a new posting box should not normally be provided within 0.4 km of an existing official box (private boxes and mail chutes should be ignored).
A country posting box is, as a rule, not provided at less than 0.8 km from an existing box, particularly when the collection would involve cost, and only in very exceptional circumstances is a box placed at less than 0.4 km from an existing box. Under normal circumstances, the minimum number of letters justifying the erection of a box without special expense for collection is 20 a week.
